THE EYES is the meeting of three musicians whose culture and listenings are spread through the twenty years among their respective ages. All tracks are improvised. Improvisation is valued for its expressive potential, often rough, always genuine and effective. It allows to imagine obscure and manifold worlds and to make them real through a non evident and never fully disclosed complexity.
The intention behind this album was to open doors and windows to fortuities and mistakes as we think true identity can be generated by their acceptation and genuine imperfection.
We lift our hands to the result.
THE EYES is just the sight on a world seen through curious eyes.
THE EYES è l’incontro di tre musicisti con cultura e ascolti che si distribuiscono nei vent’anni di età che li dividono. L’improvvisazione è alla base di ogni traccia, l’improvvisazione come possibilità espressiva spesso grezza ma genuina e efficace, in cui si possono immaginare e concretizzare mondi possibili, oscuri e complessi, di una complessità non evidente e mai manifesta. Nella realizzazione di questo album l’intenzione è stata quella di aprire porte e finestre al caso, all’errore in quanto solo l’accettazione dell’errore e dell’imperfezione è in grado di generare unicità espressiva.
Alziamo le mani di fronte al risultato.
THE EYES è solo lo sguardo di un mondo visto con occhi curiosi.
“From the conceptual point of view, we wanted to highlight the materic element in our music. We were interested in going deep in the process which is behind sounds generated by self-made instruments played in real time and through improvisation.
“The Eyes” has originated by a two-day fully improvised studio session which resulted in thirty tracks for a total eight hours of music. The following week, we worked on the album concept, defining its feeling and message. Then, the editing brought us to focus on 10 different tracks of 60 minutes total time. On this result we’ve been developing the electronic production and sound templates. Before the mixing sessions, we took a two weeks break to cool-off and gain a useful distance.
Mixing took 5 days, spent on a Solid State Logic G Series analog consolle. All tracks were bounced to a tape machine on two tracks.
Ritmo & Blu is a great studio for mixing, its rich assortment of analogue outboard has allowed the songs to gain a psychedelic and circular portamento and mood. At the end of the mixing sessions we realized 10 tracks were just too many.
Our interest was not to reach a certain length in time, all along we wanted to hold a meaning: offer the listener a chance of being brought through a journey into which he could let himself go. So we revised the original tracklist and took four tracks out. Once the album identity was clear for all of us, we’ve mastered it from the tape machine through analogue outboard.
This is what is behind “The Eyes”.”
“A livello concettuale per noi era fondamentale valorizzare l’elemento materico della nostra musica, cioè il processo di generazione di suoni che arrivano da strumenti autocostruiti, suonati in tempo reale e l’improvvisazione. “The Eyes” nasce da due giorni di improvvisazione in studio. In totale ci siamo trovati a lavorare su 8 ore di musica suddivise su circa 30 tracce.
Nella settimana successiva alle registrazioni, abbiamo lavorato sul concept del disco, cioè su come quelle 8 ore potessero diventare un disco, con il proprio feeling ed il proprio messaggio. Abbiamo quindi editato tutto quanto il progetto, cercando di avvicinarci il piu’ possibile ad un lavoro definitivo, o per lo meno definito. Il risultato sono state dieci tracce ed un ora di musica, su cui abbiamo prodotto l’elettronica e sviluppato i template sonori.
Prima di iniziare a mixare, ci siamo presi due settimane di tempo per staccarci dal lavoro, e prenderne la giusta distanza.
I mix sono stati fatti in 5 giorni, utilizzando la consolle analogica Solid State Logic e registrando il tutto su un tape machine su due tracce. Il Ritmo&Blu è un ottimo studio per mixare, i moltissimi effetti analogici che sono stati utilizzati danno ai brani un andamento psichedelico e circolare.
Alla fine dei mix ci siamo accorti che 10 brani erano troppi. Non eravamo interessati a quanto lungo dovesse essere il disco, ma volevamo assolutamente che avesse un senso dall’inizio alla fine, che fosse un viaggio entro cui l’ascoltatore potesse lasciarsi andare ed immaginare di essere quello che la musica gli suggeriva in quel preciso istante. Così abbiamo rivisto la scaletta ed eliminato 4 brani. Una volta che il disco era chiaro davanti a noi, lo abbiamo masterizzato direttamente dal tape machine passando per diversi outboard analogici.
Tutto questo è “The Eyes”.”

SenderFlos Is the collaboration between Stefano Moretti ( aka Sender) and Flos the duo composed by Stefano Castagna and Luca Formentini. The result is a very emotionally rich, immersive, yet dynamic sound made possible by their diverse approach to music composition. When Sender is using analog synths and drum machines, Flos are working on self made sound sources, conventional instruments and different ways of processing sounds. A collaboration album of SenderFlos is expected to be released at the beginning of 2015.
Stefano Castagna Born in 1959, his approach to music has been conditioned both by his guitar playing and the strategies and abilities he has developed in his professional life as a sound engineer. In his own recording studio, Ritmo&Blu, he has been writing and/or producing disparate music for more than 20 years now: dance music, Italian indie music, soundtracks and performances for theatre, ballet and visual art exhibitions. With Luca Formentini, he is also a member of Segesto Invenzioni, an association for unexpected music which organised the first Loop Fest in Brescia at the end of May 2014 Exploring different styles has endowed him with an huge repertoire that enables him to collaborate with Luca Formentini at the Flos project, where he can combine the different languages of his professional life with electronic music, his love for unconventional acoustic sounds with the technicalities of digital processing and looping. Luca Formentini. Guitar player for accident, he prefers to call himself a guitar-user. His approach has always considered strings as sound sources to be processed in real time to explore the emotional potential of sound. The resulting sound defines the instrument itself. Processing transforms strings’ vibrations to often unrecognizable timbres and textures, while other times it can reveal the hidden and surprising properties of the most subtle noise coming from wood and metal; processing is an essential part of the played instrument. His very free and emotional approach to guitar brought him to collaborate with musicians coming from different contexts and countries like Markus Stockhausen, Holger Czukay, Jean-Francois Zygel, Steve Lawson, Frank Vigroux, Steve Jansen, Theo Travis, Tellef Ogrim… He has published two albums under his name and has taken part to several collaborations and ensembles, mostly in intuitive music and improvisation. He’s got back to audible activity after five years of playing with silence ( 2007-12). (web)
Stefano Moretti aka Sender was born in Italy in 1981, he’s based both in Brescia and Berlin. Musician and producer, he works in the top quality recording studios in Italy and Germany. Since 2000, Moretti has been focusing on his work following his own eclectic feelings, working and playing all around Europe in collaborations and multi-name projects.
Co-owner and founder of electronic music label BaconAnDecks and founder of 0nrecords. Sender will release his first album with Flos (Stefano Castagna and Luca Formentini) in 2015 under the name SenderFlos. (web)
